How we invest

In this section, we talk about our investment beliefs and approach and how we invest to grow your retirement savings.

Our Investment Beliefs

We have eight core investment beliefs that guide and shape how we manage your retirement savings. Click or hover over each icon to explore more about the benefits.

Rest’s primary investment goal is to grow member’s savings by delivering net returns above the rate of inflation (referred to as real net returns) over the long term.

Rest believes that investment markets and asset prices deviate from fundamental values from time to time. Rest seeks to capture market opportunities and manage downside risk by employing an active investment management approach. This involves, for the Core Strategy, regularly reviewing and adjusting as appropriate the mix of asset classes held (i.e. active asset allocation). For all investment options, it involves regularly reviewing the exposures to major sectors and markets within asset classes and appointing active investment managers (i.e. manager selection) to manage the underlying investments where we believe the expected benefits exceed the costs of active management.

Rest believes that fundamental valuation is a key driver of a successful investment strategy, as the price paid for an investment is the main determinant of future returns. In other words, Rest seeks to capture market opportunities by buying “cheap” assets, and manages downside risk by lowering its exposure to “expensive” assets. As it can take time for the market to revalue assets back to fair value, Rest expects that its allocation to individual asset classes, sectors/markets and managers may underperform from time to time, and sometimes for prolonged periods.

With a primary focus on delivering to members real net returns over the long term, rather than seeking to produce results similar to other funds, Rest’s portfolio may look different from its peers. Rest may take positions different from the market based on research that considers total fund risk as well as opportunities, and positions will usually be adopted with a defensive bias.

Rest believes that prudent investing requires the inputs of balanced judgement, discipline, experience and patience, and that prudent investing cannot rely on a quantitative approach in isolation.

Rest believes that opportunities arise from top-down positioning of the portfolio, insightful manager selection, from careful selection of individual investments and developing meaningful relationships with our investment partners.

Rest believes that investing is inherently about understanding and managing uncertainty and risk. Rest, through the full investment cycle, places a strong emphasis on protecting members’ investments against adverse economic and investment risks, and the preservation of capital.

Rest believes that investing successfully requires the same degree of attention to the detail of implementation as to the setting of overarching strategy. Rest aims to deliver value for members from each of the following:
  • Asset allocation, sector/market exposures within asset classes, manager selection and deal analysis;
  • Investment governance and risk management framework;
  • Implementation of investment strategies; and
  • Management of tax, costs and fees.
