Your kindness can make a difference

Abuse from customers can have a serious impact on the mental health of staff in the retail sector. Let’s continue to look after each other and show kindness in the community this festive season.

2020 has been a year like no other and we understand it has brought unique challenges to all Australians. With over 85% of retail and fast food workers reporting being subjected to verbal abuse from customers*, mental health and staff well-being is at the forefront of the retail industry’s mind this holiday season.

The Shop, Distributive and Allied Employees Association (SDA) reports that one quarter of Australian retail workers experience verbal abuse from customers on a weekly basis. With the Christmas shopping period in full swing, anxiety and pressure from increased workload and stressed shoppers, the frequency of both verbal and physical abuse directed at retail staff soars.

Rest continues to get behind the “No One Deserves a Serve" campaign, driven by the SDA, with support from the National Retail Association and Australian Retailers Association. The campaign is calling for customers to be more aware of the wider impact of abuse and be more courteous to workers.

To complement the campaign, we want to help our members know they are heard and looked after, so if you or anyone you know needs help, contact: Beyond Blue 1300 22 4636 or Lifeline on 13 11 14.
